The incredible duo, Gosia and Ali will bring their mix of guitar, flute and vocals to our noontime series on Tuesday, May 8. These versatile musicians are skilled in many styles and will offer a mix of jazz, big band and R & B.
Malgorzata “Gosia” Sobala, native of Warsaw, Poland, studied music at the Frederic Chopin School of Music in Warsaw. While a student, she won a prestigious concerto competition. Prior to her arrival, she took private flute lessons from Grzegorz Cimoszko who is the Principal flutist of the Warsaw Philharmonic. In 1989, she started her undergraduate studies as a Friends of Music Scholar at the University of Florida under Sarah Baird Fouse. While at UF, she received numerous prestigious awards including the Edith P. Pitts Memorial Scholarship, and the Frances Millikan Reitz Music Scholarship. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Flute Performance she continued her studies at Florida State University under Charles Delaney and received her Master’s degree in 1995.
Presently, Ms. Sobala maintains an active teaching schedule at her private studio. She performs with the Florida Lakes Symphony, Central Florida Symphony, Gainesville Symphony, Civic Chorus and the Willis Bodine Chorale. Malgorzata Sobala also performs with Ali Che’ Ree in a jazz duo, quartet, and an 8 piece group as a vocalist/flutist.
Ali Che’Ree started his musical career as a vocalist in an orchestra back in his native Malaysia as a teenager. Since his arrival in the U.S., he has been active as a bassist/guitarist in numerous Jazz, Latin and Pop bands around Florida/Georgia area. He has appeared in Jazz festivals such as Jacksonville Jazz, Clearwater Jazz, Tampa Jazz, Atlanta/Montreux Jazz, Ormond Beach Jazz and Sunfest. He has opened for Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets, Frankie Ruiz, Steve Morse and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and performed with Wynton Marsalis, saxmen Ernie Watts and Gary Foster, trumpeters Tim Hagans, Bobby Shew and Jean Davis, guitar master Larry Coryell, Special EFX’s Chieli Minucci, Irakere’s Chuchito Valdes, The Cars’ Elliot Easton, Harold Mabern, Eric Alexander, and Bo Diddley.
Gosia and Ali will entertain in the Chamber Music Series on Tuesday, May 8 at noon in Ancient City Baptist Church.
